But people did care, including CMU President Michael Rao, who issued a statement condemning Kelly's remarks, calling them "offensive," "completely unacceptable" and inconsistent with the school's commitment to diversity. Some say, if Kelly had not said "African-American," then no one would have cared about his quote. That is a culture that they are immersed in," Kelly was quoted as saying by sportswriter Perry Farrell. "A number of them were African-Americans that had been in that culture of violence, and they're taught to look away. No one wanted to rat on another person, so the investigation dragged out.Īnd in that Free Press interview, Kelly talked about that. It's been a case of death, cover-up and lies. Several others, mostly ex-players from the CMU team, also are allegedly connected with Graham's death. One of CMU's best running backs, Jerry Seymour, no longer on the team, is charged with second-degree murder and perjury in the case. The fallout from that murder has made headlines across the state and nation. Kelly, in an article published almost two weeks ago in the Detroit Free Press, talked about the recent sad saga surrounding the death of DeMarcus Graham, a Flint resident who was beaten to death a little over a year ago outside a Mount Pleasant bar. In other words, people don't think he knows what he's talking about. There's much more scrutiny, and much more doubt of credibility. There would be no statements from the university president and there would be no need to write this column.īut Brian Kelly is a white football coach at Central Michigan University, therefore, there is a problem, because, as most of us are well aware, it's much more difficult for a white man to talk about sensitive race issues than it is for a minority. If Brian Kelly had black skin, there would be no controversy.
